Solar Panel Equipment Needed
"I can sail an Ericson 29 sailboat across the Atlantic?
I need some advice from some sailors experianced. I have a 1976 Ericson 29 in excellent conditions. Bank is the tall, 38 feet of mast, keel modified displacement is 8500 pounds, is the draft 4'3 "My plan is to go to a couples but I will not deny that I might be alone, plan to use a MR. EEV wind for direction. THIS IS THE BOAT DESIGN strong enough to handle rough seas? I do not want to destroy or damage it. What additional equipment I need to add? I was planning to have a minimum of electronics and sailing as a purist as far as possible, except it will have GPS, backup GPS, lists of sexton, compass, and the usual. You will also have a battery bank with a good 90 watt panels and probably solar and air x marine wind genny. I have no radar, no you can afford it, has no mechanical autopilot
Ericson older are almost bulletproof. If yours' is in good shape, you will not have a problem. If the wind is functional, then you will have to be tied to his forehead during the whole travel. I can only think of two absolutely MUST-HAVE peices of equipment. The first section is a real life raft with you. If you doubt my advice here, I just read the book Steve Callahan 'Adrift'. This story is not unlike a boat to his last minute in the middle of the night for unknown reasons, and then sinks in less than 3 minutes, right in the middle of the Atlantic. Callahan spent 76 days adrift in life raft. The second piece of equipment you need so you do not pass the 76 days in a life raft waiting to be found, is a type RLS 406. These small units are expensive to save lives. If you can not afford one, several marine suppliers than renting one. Imagine floating around for weeks and maybe months, starving and dying of thirst out in the middle of the Atlantic, and they'll do the right thing and at least a rental.
