Solar Panels Lifespan
What is the life of a portable solar charger?
I'm looking to buy a portable solar charger for my laptop, but can not find information on the duration of these products are supposed to last. I know that the thin-film panels usually only have assurance of 5-10 years under normal conditions of solar panels (as opposed to longer lives with crystal panels). I do not know how to translate that information to make a purchase, however. Does anyone know of a clearinghouse of information on portable solar chargers? Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Portable chargers are usually pretty useless, because they have enough output to do anything. You can count on getting about 2 / 3 the power off demand. You Nedd at least one array of 20 watts to get even a trickle. With regard to life, the solar cells tend to degrade from how long they spend in the sun, not how old you are. Thus, a charger that was only occasionally the sun would last for decades. It is also necessary have one with a driver. An array of 12 volts can get up to 19 volts unregulated installation when you are not drawing current from it, and that could fry a team of 12 volts.
