Verticle Axis Wind Turbines

What are the advantages of Verticle Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTS) as opposed to standard wind turbines? ?

And what are the best VAWT designs? Any engineers out there that can add anything would be helpful. Thanks.

The biggest advantage it that the components are all near the ground when it comes time to service them. Otherwise the only important thing is "Dollars per Kilowatt" and they are not any better.

It has also been found that Darius machines work best on flat land like the desert but don't work as well in hill with turbulent winds.
