Wind Generator Servo Motor
Can I use an AC servo motor as a generator?
I would like to build a wind turbine from a motor, but I already have 2 AC servo motors. I know they would work if they were DC. What will happen if I try this?
Hi, it turns out that you can use these as a generator if they have a magnet rotor. Easy way to check. Short two of the power leads together and try to turn the shaft. If you get cogging resistance to your turning, then you can generate voltage/current. Now, short all the windings together and rotate the shaft. You should get alot of resistance and it should be smooth. You might want to check whether it is "Y" wound or "Delta" wound. They typically have 4 leads and one is ground with the other being the 3 phases. Check for continuity to the case to establish which is ground and then check from that to any of the other leads. If you have continuity, it's "Y" wound, otherwise it's "Delta".
Hope this helps.
