Windmill Kits
Does anyone know how to change a decorative windmill into a windmill that will create electricity?
I have a neighbor who has an ornamental windmill. I asked him if he used it for electricity. He said he wished he could. I'm an electrical engineer but I can not find a kit to retrofit an ornamental windmill into an electrical device.
Any suggestions?
Chances are, being ornamental, it's just for looks and built that way. To be able to hook it up to a generator, it'd require the gears and shafts from the blades to connect to a generator to turn it.
There's a company in the U.S. called the Northern Tool Company and I think that's the name of their website, and they sell windmills that are capable of producing electricity. To produce any sizable amount, it has to be in a windy location and the windmill has to be rather large, compared to an ornamental one.
These things are rather pricey. Couple that with installation, buying a generator with a PTO and deciding to store it in batteries with a power inverter to change it back to AC, the cost exceeds the savings benefit for years to come.
